講義内容

「縄文」は日本列島の先史時代名として広く認知されているものの、その特徴は世界にほとんど知られていない。特にその文化的な多様性については、国内の学会においてさえもほとんど議論されていないのが現状である。本講義は多角的視点から縄文時代の多様性について考え、「縄文」を日本史を構成する一つの文化複合と捉える視点について学ぶ。この講義では、1・2週目に縄文時代についての基礎知識を学んだ上で、3・4週目で縄文時代に複数あったと考えられる文化圏のうち、北海道南部から東北北部にかけての地域文化圏を取り上げる。この地域の縄文遺跡群は現在ユネスコの世界遺産登録を目指しており、日本国政府からユネスコへ推薦されるまでの最終段階にある。4道県によって実際に進められてきた取り組みについて知ることで、受講生は縄文遺跡群の普遍的価値と共に浮かび上がった課題についても学ぶことができる。本講義では世界遺産を目指す縄文遺跡群の中で、最も著名な遺跡である三内丸山遺跡（青森県）や大湯環状列石（秋田県）を始め、その他の遺跡についても取り上げる。

Week1 ：先史時代の日本を考える　2020/3/2（月）～　選択式テスト
日本の先史時代（旧石器、縄文、弥生、古墳）の特徴について触れた上で、それらの中で縄文時代の特徴を考えてみる。 受講生はまず年代観について学んだ上で、縄文時代の「定住する狩猟採集民」の四季の変化に応じた暮らし、移動性やその住まい方について学ぶ。

Week2 ：縄文時代における多様性と変容　2020/3/9（月）～ 選択式テスト
「文化複合」概念について紹介した上で、縄文時代における多様な地域文化圏について論じる。その上で受講生は、1万年以上に及ぶ縄文時代の気候、集落、社会の時空間的な変化について学ぶ。

Week3 ：「北海道・北東北の縄文遺跡群」入門　2020/3/16（月）～ 選択式テスト
縄文時代における地域文化圏の一つである、北海道南部から東北北部に分布する文化圏を取り上げる。17箇所の遺跡から構成される本資産はユネスコの世界文化遺産登録を目指しており.現在その最終段階にある。 全国で3箇所しかない国指定特別史跡のうち、著名な集落遺跡である三内丸山遺跡（青森県）及び大湯環状列石（秋田県）が構成資産中に含まれており、これらの遺跡を本講義で詳しく紹介する。 この他、縄文社会の複雑性を示すいくつかの遺跡についても紹介する。

Week4 ：「縄文」の世界遺産登録を実現するためには　2020/3/23（月）～ 選択式テスト
世界遺産に登録されるための実際のプロセスを踏まえ、受講生には以下の二つの質問への答えを考えてもらう。第一に、縄文遺跡群の普遍的価値をどのように証明すべきか？ 第二に、縄文遺跡群と世界の先史遺跡を比べるためにはどうしたら良いか？

前提知識

• 日本史に関しての基礎的知識（高校修了程度）と一定の英語力が必要である。世界遺産への関心があるとなお良い。
• TOEIC650点以上（英検2級）程度の英語力を持つことが望ましいが、それ以外の方でも英語・日本語キャプションを十分に活用することにより聴講と理解が可能となる。

Introduction to Jomon Studies

Course Overview

Jomon' is widely known as one of the prehistoric periods in the Japanese archipelago, but its unique cultural characteristics are not recognized in the world. Especially, the cultural diversity embedded in the Jomon period had not been discussed even among the Japanese archaeologists. This course focuses on its cultural diversity from various viewpoints, and tries to define 'Jomon' as a cultural complex in Japanese history. Based on the introductive session of Jomon studies in the Week 1 & 2, this program will focus on one of the cultural spheres of Jomon period: 'Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku' in the Week 3 & 4. A series of Jomon sites distributed in northern Japan is now on the final nomimnation process of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Through the actual project organized by four prefecutres, students can learn the universal value of Jomon sites as well as challenges. Students taking this course can learn them from various case studies: the most popular Jomon site Sannai-maruyama, mysterious stone monuments Oyu and other sites in northern Japan.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course students will:
-Learn the basic knowledge of prehistoric archaeology in Japan
-Learn some of important arhcaeological sites in Japan and in the world
-Develop critical thinking on the historical perspective

Course Plan

Week1: Introduction to Prehistoric Japan
Instructor will introduce the four representative periods of prehistoric Japan (Paleolithic, Jomon, Yayoi and Kofun), and then focus on Jomon Period. Students can learn the its archaeological dates, and explore the lifeways in seasonal changes, mobility and residential settlements of Jomon sedentory hunter-gatherer.

Week2: Diversity and Change in the Jomon Period
Instructor shows that various cultural spheres can form the 'Jomon' Cultural Complex. In addition, he will introduce diachronic changes of climate, settlement and society in the Jomon period continued over 10,000 years.

Week3: Introduction of 'Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku'
As an example of cultural spheres in the Jomon period, instructor will introduce a case of southern Hokkaido and northern Tohoku. A group of sites (seventeeen Jomon sites distributed in this region) is now on the final nomination process of UNESCO World Heirtage. Two of National Special Historic Sites of Jomon period will be discussed in this course: A well-known large settlement site in Aomori prefecture, Sannai-maruyama site and Oyu Stone Circles in Akita prefecture. In addition, other sites proving social complexity of Jomon culture will be introduced as well.

Week4: Can 'Jomon' be inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List?
In the final week of this course, students will persuit and experience the acutual nomination process of UNESCO World Heritage. Instructor wikk introduce background and registration process of world heritage. Students will learn the interpretive method to answer to two questions as follows: How should we prove the universal value of Jomon archaeological sites? What kind of sites can be compared to Jomon sites in the world prehistory?
